1しかし、兄弟たち、時と季節については、わたしがあなたがたに書く必要はありません。
2あなたがたは、主の日が夜盗のように来ることをよく知っています。
3彼らが「平和だ、安全だ」と言うとき、突然の滅びが、子を身ごもった女を苦しめるように、彼らの上に来るからです。
4しかし、兄弟たち、あなたがたは、その日が盗人のようにあなたがたを襲うような暗やみの中にいるのではありません。
5あなたがたは皆、光の子、昼の子なのです。夜や闇の者ではありません。
6だから、ほかの人たちと同じように眠らないで、用心して、慎み深くいましょう。
7眠る者は夜眠り、酔う者は夜酔うからです。
8しかし、昼の者であるわたしたちは、信仰と愛の胸当てを着け、救いの望みのかぶとをかぶって、慎み深くいましょう。
それは、 私たちの主イエス・キリストによって救いを得るためです。
10わたしたちのために死んでくださったのは、わたしたちが目を覚ましても、眠っていても、彼とともに生きるためなのです。
11だから、あなたがたも共に慰め合い、互いに徳を高めあいなさい。
12 兄弟たちよ。私たちはあなたがたに勧めます。あなたがたの間で労苦し、主にあってあなたがたを指導し、あなたがたを戒めている人たちを覚えてください。
13 そして、彼らの仕事のために、愛情を持って彼らを非常に高く評価して下さい。 そして、平和でいてください。
14 兄弟たちよ、私たちはあなた方に勧めます。規律を守らない者を戒め、心の弱い者を慰め、弱い者を支え、すべての人に対して忍耐しなさい。
15だれも、だれに対しても、悪に対して悪を返すことがないように気をつけなさい。むしろ、あなたがた自身の間でも、またすべての人に対しても、常に善を追い求めなさい。
16 いつも喜びなさい。
17 絶えず祈りなさい。
18 すべての事について、感謝しなさい。これこそ、キリスト・イエスにあって神があなたがたに望んでおられることなのです。
19 御霊を消さないでください。
20 預言を軽蔑してはなりません。
21 すべてのことを見分け、良いものを堅く保ちなさい。
22 あらゆる悪の現れを避けなさい。
23 平和の神が、あなたがたを全く聖なるものとし、あなたがたの霊と魂と体が、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの来臨のときまで、傷のないものとして守られるように祈ります。
24 あなたがたを召された方は忠実な方ですから、必ずそのとおりにしてくださいます。
25兄弟たちよ、私たちのために祈ってください。
26 すべての兄弟たちに聖なる口づけをもって挨拶してください。
27 この手紙がすべての聖なる[1]兄弟たちに読まれるよう、主に誓ってあなたにお願いします。
